Gearing up for his biggest fight to date

He has waited for over 5 months for his chance at an international title. After an aborted attempt in August, Drian Francisco will finally campaign for the WBA International super flyweight title right here in his home country.

Drian Francisco is 26 years old and is called “Gintong Kamao” (hands of gold) as he boasts of 13 knockout wins of his total of 17. He will come into this fight undefeated and is expected to protect that clean slate.

Drian has reportedly gained a strong following amongst Filipino fight fans as most of his exploits have been showcased in Saved by the Bell which airs on Solar Sports. His televised fights raised expectations from fans because Drian’s powerful right hand and left hooks are made more pronounced by his long limbs readily giving him a reach advantage.

Facing Francisco in this fight is Panamanian Roberto “La Arana” Vasquez. Vasquez is 26 years old and boasts of a fight record of 27 wins with only 3 losses. His numbers reflect his ability to drop an opponent as 20 of his 27 wins have come via a knockout.

Vasquez has boxed more than a 100 rounds more than Francisco and is expected to bring this advantage in experience into the ring. He has been knocked down several times but has shown courage and heart as he has come back every time.

The fight card is dubbed “Boxing at the Bay: First Strike will be held at the Cuneta Astrodome in the morning of October 3. This is the an international boxing card born out of the commitment of Solar Entertainment to provide local pugilist to showcase their skills to the world.

Francisco knowing he does have power behind his gloves vows he can knock the Panamanian down with a left hook. His left hook was the punch that floored his Indonesian opponent last April 19 in a match held at the Araneta Coliseum.

Drian is one of the many Filipino boxer hopefuls who have shown renewed strength, enthusiasm and hope because of the success of Manny Pacquiao.

Francisco like to fight from a distance, he knows how to use his advantages of reach and height. More importantly he is an intelligent operator choosing his punches well and timing his attacks. He identifies his opponent’s weaknesses and capitalizes on his own advantages.

The fight will also be aired on CS9 live and will have its encore telecast in the evening of the same day on Solar Sports.
